The Nielsons Want Us (And I Want You)
The Glamores have been chosen to be a Nielson family– part of the representative households that determine the most popular TV shows in the nation. This is highly ironic, as I’ve written before about the fact that we’re a family of readers, not watchers. What type of conclusion will they form as our television remains unused, day after day? I looked at their website and we didn’t watch any of the Top Ten shows last week. Then again, I did read two fabulous books that I’ll be reviewing soon. (The Virtual Book Club is not dead.)
There are a couple of exceptions. American Idol will be starting up soon, and we watch that together as a family. We Tivoed a few episodes of Everest on the Discovery channel and watched it when we were wishing for snow.
One of my college friends has a little sister who went to Los Angeles long ago to seek her fortune. We keep up with her career, and that was how I started watching Brothers & Sisters, a drama on ABC starring some people you’ve heard of, and the lovely Sarah Jane Morris.
Although she’s played many roles, my favorite was in 1997’s Four College Roommates and Their Families Vacation at the Beach. That production focused on four families, each with only one child, who were nevertheless completely neurotic, overwhelmed and convinced we needed babysitters in order to survive the week, given the bottles, baby sunscreen and diapers we had to contend with. Sarah and the Voice of Reason’s sister played the babysitters and got rave reviews as the parents drank on the beach without children, rejoicing. (That vacation, by the way, is still an annual event, but the oldest of the 11 children can watch all but the very youngest, so we don’t begrudge Sarah her Hollywood success and hot husband, Ned, of the band Rooney.
To meander off this tangent and back on target, I sat down with a bunch of episodes of Brothers & Sisters that I’d recorded so I could keep up with Sarah and found that the Lifetime series I had planned to write, modestly titled Anne Glamore: My Life and Times, is already on TV.
My favorite episode was Affairs of State. (The link gives readers’ reactions). I told my friend to tell Sarah to let the writers for the show know that if they’re hard up for ideas, there are a couple of pieces of my autobiography that haven’t been incorporated into the series yet, but so far they’re right on the money.
As for YOU, it’s De-Lurking Week. That means all you readers who tune in every week and read but never comment, are encouraged to say something. Let me just know you’re out there. Ask a question. Give an opinion. Think up a product for me to test. Make up a rumor about a celebrity and post it. I don’t care. I just want to know you’re out there.

Ooooh, you have a famous friend! Speaking of famous people, did I ever tell you about the time I met Dick Van Dyke?
Oh….
Well, do you want to hear it again?

If you would like some new quality television to watch, I would recommend:
Veronica Mars
Grey’s Anatomy
Gilmore Girls
I am so jealous–I would love to have a Nielson box and encourage the network exec to continue more quality scripted programming. (Can you tell my brother is an actor and outraged at the number of reality series on TV?)

What great fun I’ve had reading your blog! I’m newly married and my wonderful husband has custody of 2 beautiful children. Teenagers. Yes, I know your kids aren’t quite teenagers but it’s been a good reality check to read about families with the same issues as us. It’s a little disheartening though to read that you have children 10 and under who put their own laundry away as I’m still struggling with a 17 year old ho prefers using the floor to his dresser. My 12 year old SD, however, has seen the light! I found such humor - and a lot of myself! - when I read that you tossed boxers at your son. I couldn’t stop laughing at your poor husband’s response. My husband just shakes his head when his daughter and I go at it … he has no clue! So thank you. For letting me know that my family and I are just like you and yours … Normal!

And here I thought Nielsen ratings were an urban myth.

I, too, am a new member of the Nielson “family”. We haven’t got our scanner yet or anything, but I think it’s coming in the mail soon. They want us to scan everything we buy at the grocery store…. I don’t know how I feel about that yet. But I am all for boosting the ratings of non-reality TV!
On a different note, I still love the blog! I check it everyday in the hopes that your life has slowed enough for you to be able to post more often. Although it’s probably a blessing that you don’t as that means there are more chances for things to occur to add to the blog. Did that make sense at all? Anyway, keep up the great work!

well, I love your blog, even if I have neither a husband or children :p
and i second Angie’s TV recommendations, particularly Veronica Mars, although S1 was the best, S3 is pretty good so far. Of course, being in the UK, i’m just a little behind.
