Fighting Over Soulja Boy (With Video!)

Am I the only adult fighting with her child about the proper moves to Soulja Boy?

Last night the boys and I watched some of the Music Awards, but what should have been a relaxing evening of music quickly disintegrated into a shouting match between Finn and me. It was totally his fault. He was teaching Porter and Drew how to do the Soulja Boy dance, but was leaving out the all important third step: the “lean wid it.” He refused to admit his mistake until I dragged everyone to the computer to watch Soulja Boy himself go over the moves.

Watch and see for yourself, know what I’m sayin’?

Thus instructed, we went upstairs to practice, or Drew and I did, while Finn sulked on the couch and UNBEKNOWNST to me, took illicit video of us diligently rehearsing. It’s most humiliating, especially as we had no music and I was wearing my pajamas.I have no shame, I’m posting it anyway:

Hey, remember that time I wrote about What Not To Wear In Bed? Bill took one look at these comfy Kohl’s pjs and pronounced them supremely unsexy. I’m only wearing them because he was out of town.Surprisingly, those are also Drew’s pajamas. His strategy is to take a shower at night, put on his clothes for the next day and sleep in them to save time the next morning. He has it all figured out, that boy.Not caught up with the Soulja Boy craze? Better watch and learn before Thanksgiving so you can pretend you have your finger on the pulse of America.

I had hoped to publish an installment of the Gift Guide each day, but that has proved to be a tough assignment with everything else that’s going on. I know time is of the essence, however, so check back here frequently. I have everything drafted, and need only to add the glittering prose to tie it all together.

  1. I’m not even allowed to practice my Soulja Boy in her presence at home.

  2. OMG. OMG. OMG. LilZ has been teaching me that dance! And NikkiZ! In your honor I’m totally going to film us tonight doing it.

  3. I’m so out of it. I have no idea what’s going on in the music world. I better start tuning in to MTV and VH1.

  4. You might want to use urbandictionary.com to learn what soulja boy is… and if you’re familiar with the lyrics and the dance, look up “superman” as well- warning: this is a very explicit definition.
My high school students were dancing to the song and I thought it was awesome… until I found out how offensive it is. I love the song but won’t let my students hear it in my classroom.

  5. Tee hee hee….we were dancing in front of our fireplace watching the AMA’s also last night. We were not dancing the Soulja boy though, according to my 8yo son, we were doing the dance of the dorks!!!!

  6. I have pictures of the day I came home to 6 11-12 y/o boys standing around the computer. After a moment of concern I watched as they all started trying to do the dance. It may be the sweetest thing I’ve seen since they were toddlers.

  7. MoMMY~I KNOW! My son did the whole computer tutorial thing with his friend, and then at the dance at their middle school, he chickened out and went IN THE BATHROOM to do the dance, because he was afraid he’d mess up. I asked him if he wouldn’t be more embarrassed if someone walked in and caught him! I love it…anything that makes him dance is worth it…I’m sure the macarena had some hidden meaning too, but no one ever died from it or anything.

  8. Hope you teach the jazz class a simplified version of it!!

  9. You are so awesome. I love your videos. I wish you made more, of course I wish you could post every day too so maybe that makes me a stalker…? Seriously, I read quite a few blogs but yours is always good for a laugh or some serious contemplation. Also, while I’m leaving ridiculously long comments, L.L. Bean should be sending your kickback soon. I ordered 16 of the boat totes you can design!

  10. I don’t know what it is, but I think I like it! (You are brave!)

  11. Very funny!! (The jammies look comfortable!)

  12. [...] missed the VMA’s so thanks to Anne at My Tiny Kingdom for introducing me to Soulja Boy.  The videos were very helpful!  I’ll have to ask my nine [...]

  13. How funny! This Soulja Boy phenomenon is going all over the place! I keep finding funny videos of kids and parents doing it. Not unlike your video! (I may be on Mama Trump’s side though. I’ve been making my husband watch the funny videos, and last night he mentioned that there’s a dirty side to the whole Soulja Boy thing. I haven’t looked it up yet, but he seemed pretty disturbed!)

  14. Cool…I’m determined to learn this so I can embarass Colleen by doing it with her and her dance team friends next time they are over. I assure you she will be shocked and awed…or shocked and appalled. A reaction I live for.

  15. i love your posts!
but i must say, you might want to look up the definition of ’superman’.
    really vulgar.

  16. Okay, I am laughing my tail off. You are one adorable lady and a hip mom!
*off to look this stuff up*
My kids are too young for this and I’m a country and christian music girl… so I’m lost.

  17. HA! My oldest has been teaching it to his younger brothers. Its damn funny to watch a 5 and 4 yr old do it. Even the baby tries. There was a big debate about the moves on the radio this am…it seems that you can change them up.

  18. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, and I hope that you and all your readers take a gander at this. I work for a radio staion in West Palm. Some of our jocks looked up the lyrics to Souljah Boy at http://www.urbandictionary.com…I highly recommend that you and your readers do the same. Some how, I have a feeling you wouldn’t appreciate all the lyrics. I am only 22 yrs. old and after reading what “superman” and “spiderman” mean, I really can’t stand that song. I am a long time reader and I love what you do and what you have to say! Keep it up!

  19. [...] Speaking of office and school supplies, my reliable friend Margaret, who should have just written this damn guide herself - THAT’S how many great ideas she had– has alerted me that there’s a segment of the elementary school population that’s wild about Pencil Petz erasers.  The kids stack them on pencils or make bracelets out of them.  There’s no denying that collecting erasers is much more edifying than fighting over Soulja Boy. [...]

  20. [...] don’t know that I’ve discussed the rap music phenomenon since I published the video of Drew and me trying to do the Soulja Boy dance. In a word, Finn continues to listen to this stuff [...]

  21. [...] I’ve written about the rap music before, including the awful lyrics to “Low” and “My Humps” and the fact that I let Finn teach me the Soulja Boy dance. [...]

    What I'm Reading

I read this ten years ago and am reading it again. I want to read *Stargirl* but must avoid the library until Porter locates lost books.

    The Boys Are Loving

Hooray-- there's a sequel to the original Diary. The guys are snarfing it up.

Porter finished all the Harry Potter books so I started him on A Wrinkle In Time, and he's enjoying it. I bought the whole set so he'd have plenty to read for the next few months.

After finishing the Harry Potters, Drew turned to the Hardy Boys. He can't tell a story "in a nutshell," so I've heard all about the missing jalopy, and the red wig. Solve the mystery already!
