Beast

Yesterday Finn informed me that it’s “beast” that he’s twelve and an official preteen.

Upon further questioning, he stated that the word “beast” is at least as old as our television, which dates to the last century, and garners laughter from his friends.

I was psyched to learn some groovy lingo.

  1. “Beast” is a big on around here, too.

  2. At first glance I read that word as “breast” and not “beast”. Now that would have been much funnier! :) Guess it’s time to get my eyes checked again.

  3. I’ve given up trying to keep up. I stick with “Jolly good” and hope the kids pick it up from me. They haven’t yet, but I live in hope……..

  5. I accidently found your “internet column” by mistake. I googled Bible Clubs. I’m a Director of Children’s Ministry in Loveland, OH. To my surprise I found your post about Bible Club and the Pink Thong! LOL Hilarious!! I’ve been reading other posts - loved the one about Finn and the Facts of Life. Thanks and Happy New Year!

  6. Enjoy every second; as a mom (and a lawyer) I know how fast the years fly by. Eleven is such a great age; 8, they are still babies. Nothing better than listening to your kids talk.

    Great blog!

  7. I like to think that I keep up with the times and the lingo pretty well, but this post showed me that I’m living in a dream world! I had to check out the urban dictionary to get the full definition of “beast”. Can I still say “cool”, or does that make me old?

  8. So I asked Joseph (my 12-yr old son) about “beast.”

Seems he hasn’t heard that one before (maybe it hasn’t yet made it to the midwest :-).

When I told him the word means something ‘cool,’ he went on to say, “oh, you mean something ‘raw’ or ‘righteous.”

    Yeah, that’s what I mean…

  9. It reminds me of the Spongebob episode when Pearl says something is ‘totally corral’. Then Mr. Krabs starts using the phrase and so she stops.

  10. “Beast”, huh? I’m still hung up on “sweet”, “rad”, and “whack”. I suppose “cool” is always a good fallback. It has a sort of timelessness to it.

This whole conversation reminds me of that cool kid from Never Been Kissed: “Rufus. It’s my new cool word. Spread it around like wildfire.”

I always wonder how they start.

    What I'm Reading

I've never read any of his fiction, but his book about the craft of writing was awesome.

Hey, I have a story in this book about how I'm not always the best mom. It's guaranteed to make you feel better about yourself, especially the part where I throw stuff at Finn.

I'd heard a lot about this and enjoyed it, but not as much as one of my all-time faves:

    The Boys Are Loving

I didn't think Porter would like this, but I was desperate for him to read something, so I shoved it at him and it was a WINNER.

Hooray-- there's a sequel to the original Diary. The guys are snarfing it up.

Porter finished all the Harry Potter books so I started him on A Wrinkle In Time, and he's enjoying it. I bought the whole set so he'd have plenty to read for the next few months.

After finishing the Harry Potters, Drew turned to the Hardy Boys. He can't tell a story "in a nutshell," so I've heard all about the missing jalopy, and the red wig. Solve the mystery already!
