Science Lab 102 Exam

1. Place marbles on a large magnet, cover them with the contents of a dishwasher detergent pod, and subject it to an eerie light. Let sit for three days.

magnet

Will the light and detergent cause the marbles to become magnetic?

a) Yes

b) No

c) Depends on brand of dishwasher detergent.

d) Depends whether the light is regular or fluorescent.

Advanced: Now pour a gallon of water over the whole shebang. (Don’t worry that the experiment is taking place in your room on your dresser rather than under laboratory conditions.)

What happens?

a) The water makes the marbles magnetic.

b) The marbles are not magnetic, but are clean.

c) Water leaks through the floor into the basement, causing Mom to freak out.

d) Unsure; I abandoned the experiment to take Feathers out to jump on the trampoline.

  1. I’m going to go with b) for the first question and c) for the second. When will we get the answers?

  2. Good to know my five year old daughter isn’t the only kid trying to ruin the house she lives in!

  3. At our house, the experiments are usually of the kitchen variety. And after admiring the finished product, I am asked to taste it. C never understands why Mama won’t taste her raw eggs, flour, salt and cheerios shakes. I shudder just thinking about it.

  4. I’ll go with b on both questions. How did I do?

  5. So, what are the answers to the questions? I’m also going to guess a and c.

    Waidmann

  6. I have no clue, what so ever.

  7. I’m going to say the answers are b and d.

  8. B on the first. C AND D on the second.

We’d also like to know if there was punishment or only a lesson on the proper way to conduct experiments (including the step of asking for permission).

  9. I’m stumped. Although I’m pretty darn sure I’d rather take Feathers to jump on the trampoline. I’m curious as to how this experiment turns out…:)

  10. Let’s see…d? to the first question, and b, c, and d to the second.

    Can’t wait for the answer!!

  11. Hahaha! Never a dull moment.

  12. You did not include the option of trying to get one’s siblings to taste the results. That was my personal favorite as a child. Its a miracle my younger brothers lived through some of my experiments.

  13. I’ll answer both b and c for the second question. Although I hope c isn’t correct, for your sake!

  14. The correct answers are :

    1)b

    2)b & c

Science 103 was a lecture about science experiments being confined to the kitchen or bathroom.

  16. I have a science experiment but it involves your olives.

I made them a week ago and slowly have been eating them. I went in the fridge to get a few and noticed olive oil butter in my container. I put a little more vinegar and stirred the concoction to no avail. I think my fridge might be too cold or something. Has anyone else made the olives and found olive oil butter in their’s? and suggestions, should i just get the remaining olives left and start over?

    What I'm Reading

I've never read any of his fiction, but his book about the craft of writing was awesome.

Hey, I have a story in this book about how I'm not always the best mom. It's guaranteed to make you feel better about yourself, especially the part where I throw stuff at Finn.

I'd heard a lot about this and enjoyed it, but not as much as one of my all-time faves:

    The Boys Are Loving

I didn't think Porter would like this, but I was desperate for him to read something, so I shoved it at him and it was a WINNER.

Hooray-- there's a sequel to the original Diary. The guys are snarfing it up.

Porter finished all the Harry Potter books so I started him on A Wrinkle In Time, and he's enjoying it. I bought the whole set so he'd have plenty to read for the next few months.

After finishing the Harry Potters, Drew turned to the Hardy Boys. He can't tell a story "in a nutshell," so I've heard all about the missing jalopy, and the red wig. Solve the mystery already!
