If mom or I need a lexicon to decipher the majority of lyrics of any song, that pretty much excludes the tune, and pretty much all rap in general. Our 12 year old son knows the limits, in spite of it 'being everywhere'. And the vast majority of Pop that is played is heavily monitored for content, as well. Mom and he (and his 5 year old brother) love Country (which I can hardly bear), but even that has it's troublesome lyrics - like the day the older son asked me "what's a *Honky Tonk Badonkadonk* was and does mom have one?" Being an old rocker, at heart, no one seems interested in my favorite genre or tastes (including Dave Matthews, Joe Jackson, Counting Crows .. ) which largely eliminates the need to explain their lyrics. As a kid, myself, I did listen to tunes to which my parents would have objected (The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Who, Mott the Hoople, The Doors, Genesis...), but *they* never heard them. Maybe that's cheating, but the rule of the house was certain tunes would not be played, and so I suppose I upheld the spirit of that rule. And if our kids did the same, I suppose I could understand it, in principle, with still holding the ultimate veto power if a specific artist/tune was far over-the-top. Lastly, street talk *never* flies with mom. It never did when I was a kid, and it has never flown with my much-better-half. How the boys speak to parents (and other adults) does not have to be the same as the way they speak to their peers, but they will know the difference. My kids are into groups such as Hawk Nelson and Skillet, both hard rock/punk Christian music. Also, and this is a secret from his friends, Bennett has developed a love of Puccini opera since being in Tosca and LaBoheme. It is so cool to me that he loves the choral music that I love from being in the BBC since 2nd grade. His taste is eclectic like mine! If we start a youth praise band at church, we definitely need your boys for the band so it will rock. Can't wait to see the book!! Love the article!!! I am in NO way as cool as you. Its refreshing to read on with someone who's music experiences mirror mine and I much prefered listening to Linkin Park in the car with my kids over the Wiggles. Now they have their own mp3 players with music I loaded. I may not love alot of it and I stay away from the grossly offensive stuff I don't want them liking but I love that we can all sing together to non-cheesy tunes! I love it Anne!
