Labeling Camp Clothes: Dull Chore Made Zany Fun
Drew leaves for camp tomorrow. He’ll be gone for three weeks. I don’t usually get terribly sentimental, but that moment when I drop him off can be pretty hard. Two years ago he looked like the last photo in this post and I got a little teary.
We all survived, however, and it’s hard to believe it’s time for camp again already.
The most heinous aspect of preparing for camp is the part where you set out all the camping equipment, shorts and pants, towels and underwear, and make sure it’s all clearly marked with your camper’s name. I’ve tried the iron on labels, but either I suck at ironing or the ones I bought were poorly made. They flaked off in the wash and that didn’t piss me off at all.
Now I stick to the “last name with a Sharpie” method and it works as well as anything.
I’ve never marked socks before, but Drew insisted he had a fabulous way to identify his socks, so I armed him with a Sharpie and let him have a go at it.
I bet he comes back with every single sock.
If you want a solution that’s less, um, artistic, a reader recommends Mabel’s Labels.

I just read your article in Lipstick–it’s hilarious! It was the only article that made me really laugh out loud several times. I love that you pointed out that Bill reads Triathlete magazine while you’re putting on all your notions and potions in the bathroom. Same thing happens at our house!

I too LOVED the article in lipstick, especially about the eyebrows migrating to the chin. Hilarious!

Got a tip for great labels — Mabel’s Labels. I’ve never actually gone through the process of using the iron-on ones, but have used the regular stick-on ones on clothes and they come through the washer just fine. And now they have a new stick-on line designed for clothes. There are even round ones designed to go inside shoes, although I haven’t tried them yet. Labels on sippy cups and preschool lunch containers have gone through hundreds of dishwashings and look like new. They’re truly amazing.

I’m sending Naturalist off to camp….for a week. I think it’s too long, she thinks it’s not long enough.
I may have to suck it up and look for a 3 week one around here for next summer–she’d be in heaven!

I can’t imagine what it must be like sending your child off into the big wide world. Mine are only 5 and 2 and have apron strings wound so tight it’s going to take some pretty tough tugging to get them loose!
