I've never actually gone through the process of using the iron-on ones, but have used the regular stick-on ones on clothes and they come through the washer just fine. And now they have a new stick-on line designed for clothes. There are even round ones designed to go inside shoes, although I haven't tried them yet. Labels on sippy cups and preschool lunch containers have gone through hundreds of dishwashings and look like new.
