Not Reassuring

The letters we get from Drew at camp are often a mixture of alarming and reassuring.

Dear Mom,

Your not aloud to have candy at camp. I miss Skittles. Also i need some cortusone really bad.

or

Dad,

I’ve started jumping on horses. You trot over ground poles in 2 point then jump over a pole then canter. Last nite I got sick and had 105. The nurse gave me some medisin.

  1. It’s tough puting your child’s care into someone else’s hands. I am sure he is having a blast, and they’ll call ya if they need ya.

  2. I’m suddenly reminded of that song Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah.

  3. ‘I miss Skittles’. Now that’s my kind of kid! :)

I just got a letter from my daughter’s camp director (up at a wolf sanctuary) saying “today, the kids had the rare treat of butchering up a horse one of the ranchers donated…”

    OMWhaaaaa?

    You better send corisone, stat!

  4. Nice to see they teach *real* riding down there!

  5. I once had a camp experience that consisted of letters home saying:

“Camp is fun. There is a drought so we don’t get to take baths, just take soap to the lake. They can’t wash the clothes either, but mine are not really dirty. We went camping the other night and my tent collapsed so they made us sleep with the boys and share sleeping bags.”

My mother apparently called the camp a little frantic, can you imagine?

  6. Well it sounds like he’s having fun - even with the need for cortisone and medicine…

A question though, is he allergic to horses? I spike a fever and break out in hives quickly after being exposed to horses and hay.

  7. This is why I could never send my kid away. I would have been in the car and taken him home. I know. It’s not the right thing to do but I would do it anyway. Even now I want to go get your son. Again, I know it’s crazy and not at all necessary. But there you go…

  8. He must be having a great time!

  9. I LOVE how Drew tells you what he can/cannot have but…he tells Bill all about his accomplishments. BOYS…gota love ‘em ;)

  10. That’s so funny. You’re going to have great fun reminding him off all this when he grows up!

  11. You have quite a kid there.

Alltop, confirmation that I kick ass

    What I'm Reading

I've never read any of his fiction, but his book about the craft of writing was awesome.

Hey, I have a story in this book about how I'm not always the best mom. It's guaranteed to make you feel better about yourself, especially the part where I throw stuff at Finn.

I'd heard a lot about this and enjoyed it, but not as much as one of my all-time faves:

    The Boys Are Loving

I didn't think Porter would like this, but I was desperate for him to read something, so I shoved it at him and it was a WINNER.

Hooray-- there's a sequel to the original Diary. The guys are snarfing it up.

Porter finished all the Harry Potter books so I started him on A Wrinkle In Time, and he's enjoying it. I bought the whole set so he'd have plenty to read for the next few months.

After finishing the Harry Potters, Drew turned to the Hardy Boys. He can't tell a story "in a nutshell," so I've heard all about the missing jalopy, and the red wig. Solve the mystery already!
