Being Brave

Today would have been my mom’s 67th birthday.

I still have her birthday set on Birthday Alarm, which emails me in advance of everyone’s birthdays so I won’t let one slide.  I haven’t been able to remove my mom from the service.  It would be like removing her.

Today I’m supposed to be writing an article that’s due soon, but instead I’m gathering my boys close and thinking happy thoughts about my mom.

  3. I completely understand. My thoughts are with you. I just got a package in the mail from my aunt. She was going through my grandma’s things (grandma passed away earlier this year). My aunt found some crafting projects that my grandma was working on to send to me. Grandma would embroider quilting squares and I would turn them into a quilt. In the package some of the squares were done and some had not yet been done. I came undone. Weird how things hit you out of no where.

  5. Thinking of you. My mom would have been 67 on June 27th. This is my 20th year without her.

  6. that is so sad, I am so sorry. It makes me really appreciative, I will tell you.

I dread the day, and honestly don’t know how I will go on when it happens.

    Big hug.

  7. Yeah, me too. My PDA still has her birthday and phone number and address, and I can’t bring myself to clear them out. I chipped a mug today, one that used to be hers, and I almost cried.

  8. I understand…my mom would have been 69 on July 7th. I still can’t delete my mom’s cell phone number from my call list–just can’t bring myself to do it.

  9. I understand. My mother died five years ago, six in November, and I still have her on my answering machine. Three messages. But I don’t want to forget her voice. I am so careful not to let my machine get too many emails or it will erase from the beginning and she is the first three. I miss her. so I do understand.
thank you for your blog. And thank you for letting ‘us’ get to know your mother through your blog.

  10. It never gets easier, does it? You’re doing ok, and then bang, like a freight train it hits you. You’re in my prayers.

  11. Yeah, I was calling my mother’s work number because they never removed her voice mail until very recently.

Happy Birthday to your mom. I always like to say that because, really, who’s to say they don’t celebrate in heaven?

  15. I’m glad you are taking the time to remember her with your boys. She sounds like an amazing woman. I haven’t been able to delete my Dad’s phone numbers from my cell phone or his birthday from my calendar as well. The voice mail message at my Mom’s is him talking. I love hearing it. Some people think we should change it, but I hope my Mom will keep it there for a long time.

  16. I can’t imagine that you will ever forget your Mom’s birthday. You should even celebrate it - go out to dinner, make her favorite meal or dessert. Or buy her favorite flowers? Something to mark this special occasion. Make it a new tradition and tell the boys all the stories of her life.

  17. ((HUGS)) Take Care!! :)

  18. My thoughts are with you today…

  19. Happy Birthday to your mom! She must have been a remarkable woman.

My mom has been gone 14 years and I’m still not quite used to the idea. Though it has gotten a little easier over the years, I am hit by the loss anew at the weirdest times. I was just talking about my mom to my kids today and burst into tears.

Hope you are remembering all her best stuff today!

Alltop, confirmation that I kick ass

    What I'm Reading

I've never read any of his fiction, but his book about the craft of writing was awesome.

Hey, I have a story in this book about how I'm not always the best mom. It's guaranteed to make you feel better about yourself, especially the part where I throw stuff at Finn.

I'd heard a lot about this and enjoyed it, but not as much as one of my all-time faves:

    The Boys Are Loving

I didn't think Porter would like this, but I was desperate for him to read something, so I shoved it at him and it was a WINNER.

Hooray-- there's a sequel to the original Diary. The guys are snarfing it up.

Porter finished all the Harry Potter books so I started him on A Wrinkle In Time, and he's enjoying it. I bought the whole set so he'd have plenty to read for the next few months.

After finishing the Harry Potters, Drew turned to the Hardy Boys. He can't tell a story "in a nutshell," so I've heard all about the missing jalopy, and the red wig. Solve the mystery already!
