Sunday Snippets

The junior high kids meet at a separate building during Sunday School, so we drop Finn off first.

“We’ll meet you in the parking lot after church,” Bill said as Finn got out of the car, reaching back into the rear seat to poke Porter one more time.

Unlike his brothers, Drew was already in the appropriate mood.

“Goodbye, brethren,” Drew said.

At dinner Porter tucked his napkin into the collar of his shirt and held up his pinky finger.

“I’m being fancy,” he said.

“Where did you learn that?” Bill asked.

“SpongeBob.  But this isn’t fancy in China.  It means you’re flicking someone off.  Fancy here, the opposite in China.”  He took a huge bite of hamburger.

Is he really learning cultural distinctions on SpongeBob, or what?  Inquiring minds want to know.  He and Drew already think the Great Wall is held together with sticky white rice, and won’t be persuaded otherwise until they see it in person.

Porter and Drew were perusing their popcorn order forms for Cub Scouts. They’ve had the forms for over a month and have yet to sell a single kernel.

“I want to sell at least $300 worth so I can get a water gun and a compass,” Porter said.

“I don’t see how you’re going to do that,” Drew told him.  “We don’t even know how to fill out the forms.”

  1. My 3yo daughter is regularly fancy like that. We have only SpongeBob to thank. Although I cannot confirm that’s a rude gesture in China. Either I haven’t seen that episode or they’ve picked that up somewhere else. You’ll truly amaze your sons if you tell them, “When in doubt, pinky out.” ;)

  2. I made a deal with the kids…we donate and volunteer so much at school, it was decided that we will not participate in any fundraisers. What ever junk they want to “earn”, I will consider buying for them instead. Saves the headache.

  3. Hey there - I live in China, and I don’t know about the pinky thing. I’ll try it out in the supermarket today and let you know how it goes.

I can, however, assure the brethren that the Great Wall is not stuck together with rice. We’ve dragged our kids there on several occasions, and I can confirm that the wall goes on and on and on, with not a speck of rice in sight. It does have a cool tobaggan you can race down after spending hours whining to your parents about how boring this big dumb ole wall is.

Alltop, confirmation that I kick ass

    What I'm Reading

I've never read any of his fiction, but his book about the craft of writing was awesome.

Hey, I have a story in this book about how I'm not always the best mom. It's guaranteed to make you feel better about yourself, especially the part where I throw stuff at Finn.

I'd heard a lot about this and enjoyed it, but not as much as one of my all-time faves:

    The Boys Are Loving

I didn't think Porter would like this, but I was desperate for him to read something, so I shoved it at him and it was a WINNER.

Hooray-- there's a sequel to the original Diary. The guys are snarfing it up.

Porter finished all the Harry Potter books so I started him on A Wrinkle In Time, and he's enjoying it. I bought the whole set so he'd have plenty to read for the next few months.

After finishing the Harry Potters, Drew turned to the Hardy Boys. He can't tell a story "in a nutshell," so I've heard all about the missing jalopy, and the red wig. Solve the mystery already!
